A visitor

A sudden bout of anxiety hits me five minutes before the studio visit. My palms are sweaty, mouth dry. I take a quick look around the studio and take a deep breath as I see her car pull up in the falling snow.

Out of the holidays

My children and grandchildren have returned to their lives, the holiday decorations are tucked away, laundry done, the house cleaned. I sit here with a mug of tea, savoring the quiet, outside sounds muffled by the first snowfall, the antique clock ticking behind me. Though I am grateful for the busting-out-at-the-seams couple of weeks in our tiny house, the shared laughter and meals and happy chaos that is always part of a family gathering, in the midst of it there is little room for contemplation or deep work in the studio.

Saying Yes. part 1

I own this little piece by my artist friend Annette Lieblein

It is a collage where you can see the word yes stenciled on it. She shared with me that when she was little, she did not like being told no and so she wrote the word yes over and over on pieces of paper and strung them from her ceiling. I love this image of a small girl looking up at and being surrounded by “Yes.” Yes to life. Yes to possibility. Yes.

As the world slowed down…

I hunkered in at home, anxious and forced to live more and more with my own thoughts. I found myself increasingly aware and more conscious of my inner dialogue - muttering away, jotting down notes, asking myself questions aloud.

I heard the same from many of my artist friends. This forced pause encouraged an examination of my current path in life and art; in my priorities, desires, sense of gratitude, and purpose. I sensed the fragility of life and human connection. I felt my need of others, and of community.
